Charlotte Mason Grand Rapids is a community for families who seek to implement the Charlotte Mason method of education in their homeschools.

For event dates, times, and locations, join our Facebook Group.

Our anchor event is our monthly Parents’ Tertulia Study Group, during which we discuss a reading from one of Charlotte Mason’s original homeschool volumes, along with an article from the Parents’ Review. We are currently discussing Volume 4: Ourselves. For the complete reading schedule and more details, join our Facebook Group.

On a Friday afternoon once a month, we gather at a local trail for a nature hike, taking the opportunity for object lessons wherever we encounter them. Families are welcome to bring their nature journals and pause for some journaling time during or after the hike.

Our “gateway” or most popular activity is our regular book club.

The children’s book club is led independently by 12-year-old Liliana, and includes discussion, snack, a craft, and a game or activity.

The moms’ book club meets at the same time in another room to discuss a work of fiction for the purpose of engaging in Mother Culture.

At least once a quarter, sometimes more often, families are invited to join in a potluck and an evening of handicrafts. Everyone brings their own handicraft to work on after the meal while we enjoy a time of fellowship.

In the spring and summer, moms are offered the opportunity to meet several times for a set-aside planning time for their homeschools. We share ideas and experiences, answer questions, offer advice, and work on our plans in a communal setting.
